Despite repeated denials by UK, the US and UK are said to have participated in a paper-based mock invasion of a fictitious country that resembled the Iranian coastline and the intended enemy resembling Iranian positions and targets. A UK spokesman downplayed this exercise as an effort by both countries to have coordinated armies capable of operating together. The US Ministry of Defense’s Defense Science & Technology Laboratory, which ran this game, described the event as “the year’s main analytical event of the UK-US Future Land Operations Interoperability Study.”
But many analysts believe that the US and UK are developing contingency plans to invade Iran should talks, UN sanctions, and diplomatic efforts fail in curtailing the Iranian nuclear program. Some say that Israel may participate in the operation but may be excluded by the US because it fears that it will widen the conflict and bring all of Israel’s enemies together as an Islamic alliance against a Judaic-Christian alliance. |
