Increased use of fossil fuels leading to more greenhouse gases, reduction in forest cover, high development activity will eventually cause intense rain in the North East, drought and desertification in the North West, and inundation of coastal areas. Speaking at the “Global Warming” seminar, Prof. R. Sukumar from the Center of Ecological Sciences at the Indian Institute of Science said that the entire Sundarbans in Bangladesh will be inundated causing large scale migration of 10-15 million people into India. He also pointed out that forest cover has fallen by 5.4%.
The consequences of unbridled and unmanaged growth will be disastrous for India. He said that the Thar Desert will be spreading further east, agricultural production will fall drastically, and the pressure on land will be unbearable.
Sukumar recommended that public pressure Government to use more energy efficient resources, technologies, and introduce policies that would promote greener practices. |
