In
a letter to United Nations Secretary
General Kofi Annan, the Hamas
Government of the Palestinian
Territories (PT) has proposed a
“two-state solution” where it can
live in “freedom and independence
side-by-side with our neighbors.”
This is the first time Hamas has even
acknowledged
Israel
as a neighbor that lives in the area.
So far, its argument is to not accept
Israel
’s right to exist.
PT Foreign Minister said that
Palestinians “look forward to living
in peace and security” in wording
that closely resembles the peace
process language.
However,
it is not clear if Hamas has done a
180 degree turn on its stance not to
recognize
Israel
, the peace process, or prior
international commitments.
Israel
, the
US
, and EU have been demanding these
positions in addition to Hamas
eschewing violence as a tool of
negotiation.
