In a major departure from traditional
hostility the Bharatiya Janata Party
(BJP) said that it would be happy to
work with the Congress Party to spur
reforms in economy, democracy, and
society if it should give up its
agenda of “minorityism.”
Responding to recent statements by Congress
President Sonia Gandhi’s charge that
the communists were communalizing
foreign policy, former BJP President
Lal Krishna Advani agreed with her. He
went a step forward to say that he
would be happy to work with her if she
could also have the same attitude of
de-communalizing domestic politics. He
said “appeasement of minorities
takes them nowhere.” He suggested
that the minorities “work for the
spread of literacy and quality
education among themselves” as
appeasement is not in “their social
or economic” interest. |
