The 19-member Election Commission team
cleaning the electoral rolls of West
Bengal has expressed deep shock over
the systematic mechanisms adopted in
including thousands of bogus voters in
9 border districts. The team working
on the "Operation Clean Roll" project
is expected to submit a "stern" report
to the EC. For decades, opposition
parties, NGOs, and media have
complained about systematized
electoral fraud perpetrated by
successive communist governments in
West Bengal. EC officials publicly
chided block development officers with
obvious political sympathies for
electoral fraud. The EC has also taken
a very tough position on the CPM for
instigating armed party workers to
assault villagers who complained
against the party.
