Palakkad - Malampuzha | Silent Valley National Park
PALAKKAD
80 Kms away from Trichur. The district of Palakkad is a land of valleys, hillocks, rivers, forests, mountain streams, dams and irrigation projects. Situated at the foot of the Western ghats, this is the gate way of Kerala from the north. Palakkad derives its name from the Malayalam word Pala (aisteria scholars) and
Kadu (forest) which means that this place was once a beautiful stretch of forests covered which the sweet scented flowers of the Pala tree.
Malampuzha
12 km from Palakkad. This famous picnic spot which comprises a dam and a beautifully landscaped garden with a swimming pool, children's park etc is situated on the lower hills of the western ghats. There is an aerial rope way across the garden. There are frequent buses from Palakkad.
Accommodation: Garden House (KTDC), 300 meters away from Bus Stand and Govt. Guest House, near Hermit's end are the budget hotels.
Silent Valley National Park
Set up in the year 1984, this park is located in the north east corner of the district of Palghat, spread over an area of 89.52 km. Mannarghat is the nearest town (57km). Coimbatore is the nearest airport (155km) and Palghat is the nearest railhead (99km) for reaching the park.
It is an Indian example of almost totally undisturbed rain forest. There are 966 flowering and over 100 orchids plants are found along with wide range of animals and birds. The fauna here are elephant, tiger, leopard, wild bear, nilgai, sambar etc. It lies along the Kunthi River valley. The best month for visiting the park are September to March.
