HAMPI
It is located in the middle of Karnataka and 165 Km away from Hospet district. Hampi is also known as Vijayanagar. It is a ruined town made with stone temples, elephant stables, barracks and palaces. It was also a major point of confluence for Hindu and Jain worshippers. Most of the site is early 16th century, built during the 20 year reign of Krishna Deva Raya (1509 -1529) with the citadel standing on the bank of Tungabhadra river.
Virupaksha Temple
It is at Hampi. The road run down to the village from the Hill, you can find a wide pathway running to east, there you can see the towering Virupaksha (Pampapati) Temple. Visit : 0800 - 1230, 1500 - 1830.- The foreigners are to sign on a book at the office. It have 9 storey gopuram and the temple is still in use. The painted ceiling of mandapam inside the temple is worth to see. The towering elephant stables which was the home to the eleven elephants of the royal guard can also be seen.
The Archaeological Museum
It is at the southern part of the ruins, Kamalapuram. Visit : Saturday to Thursday, 10 - 5. Entry - free. It exhibits many of the weapons, paintings, sculpture, coins and cooking utensils found at Hampi and some statues collected from the Shiva and Vishnu temples.
