Melsevur, Gingee Taluk, South Arcot District.

On the south base of the mandapa in front of the central shrine in the Vrishabha-purisvara temple. Parantaka I.  Year 21 : 927 – 28 A.D.

This inscription is dated in the reign of Madiraikonda Parakesari.

It records the endowment of sheep for a perpetual lamp for god Tiruttanronrip Pe[rumanadigal] by Ku[rra]nchenan of Nambipuram in Pa[n]di-nadu, an agent of Brahmapallavaraiyar.

No. 286.

(A. R. No. 260 of 1904).

Tiruchchanur, Chandragiri Taluk, Chittoor District.

On the west base of the vahana-mandapa  in front of the temple.

Parantaka I : Year 29 : 935 – 36 A.D.

This inscription is in fragments.  One of the fragments is dated in the reign of Madiraikonda Parakesarivarman, i.e., Parantaka I.

The first piece seems to record a gift of gold for a perpetual lamp and mentions . . . . . . . . ngai [Sa]nkara[n Rana]singan and the sabha of Tiruchchogunur in Kudavurnadu in Tiruvengadakottam.  The second piece seems to register another gift of 88 kalanju for a perpetual lamp and other services.

No. 290.

(A. R. No. 263 of 1904).

Tiruchchanur, Chandragiri Taluk, Chittoor District.

On a detached stone built into the outer prakara of the temple.

Parantaka I.  Year [3] 2 : 938-39 A. D.

This inscription dated in the reign of Maduraikonda Parakesari i.e., Parantaka I seems to record a gift of god Tiruvengadattu ninrarulina Perumanadigal by the king, Sri Pirantaka.

Kudumiyamalai, Kulattur Taluk, Tiruchirappalli District.

On the west face of the north pillar in the rock-out shrine in the Melaikoyil temple.

Parantaka I.

This inscription records the gift of 15 kalanju by Kondandaraman, son of Sri Pirantakar alias Sola-Perumanadigal for burning two perpetual lamps.

Kudumiyamalai, Kulattur Taluk, Tiruchirappalli District.

On the east wall of the rock-cut shrine in the Melaikoyil temple.

Parantaka.  Year 15 : 921 – 22 A.D.

This inscription records the gift of 7 tulaippon by Nakkan Sankaran of Valliyur, in Nallur-nadu, for burning a perpetual lamp to the deity Tirumerrali-perumanadigal and another gift of 7 tulaippan by Kuliyanachchan alias Arikulantavaranapperaraiyan, the headman of Sinjai in Idaiyala-nadu for a perpetual lamp to Tirumulattanattu-pperumanadigal in Tirumilakkunram.

Kudumiyamalai, Kulattur Taluk, Tiruchirappalli District.

On the south wall of the rock-cut shrine in the Melaikoyil temple.

Parantaka I.  year 16 : 922 – 23 A.D.

This inscription records the gift of gold by Kmaran, son of Arisilar and a naltive of Kodungolur in Malai-nadu, for a perpetual lamp to the deity Tirumulattanattu Perumanadigal, at Tirunalakkunram in Kunriyur-nadu.

On a pillar in the mandapa in front of the central shrine in the Vedaranyesvara temple.

Parantaka I.  year 33 :  939  - 40 A. D.

This incomplete inscription, stops abruptly after mentioning the deity Tirumaraikkadu-udaiyar, in Umbalanadu.

Vedaranyam, Tirutturaippundi Taluk, Tanjore District.

On a pillar in the mandapa in front of the central shrine in the Vedaranyesvara temple.

Parantaka I.  Year 35 : 941 – 42 A. D.

This records the gift of 90 sheep, by Manimarpayan, son of Nallaman Solavi…an of Marudur in Kaimalai-nadu in Gangapadi, for burning a perpetual lamp to the god Mahadeva at Tirumaraikkadu, with one ulakku of ghee, daily by the measure called Tirumaraikkadan.

There is another damaged inscription along with this, which seems to record a provision of 1 tuni and 1 padakku of paddy to the same day.

On another pillar in the mandapa in front of the central shrine in Vedaranyesvara temple.

Parantaka I.  year 30 : 936 – 37 A. D.

This records the gift of 100 Ilakkasu by Virasola-Anukkan Kadan Melvayil for burning a night lamp (ira-vilakku) in the hall (ambalam) built by Kadamba Bhattar of Tirumaraikkadu.

(A. R. No. 444 of 1904).

Vedaranyam, Tirutturaippundi Taluk, Tanjore District.

On a pillar in the mandapa in front of the central shrine in the Vedaranyesvara temple.

Parantaka I. Year 20 : 926 – 27 A. D.

This inscription is dated in the reign of Madiraikonda Parakesari.

It records the gift of 60 kalanju of gold to god Mahadeva of Tirumaraikkadu, a perundevadana  in Umbala-nadu for the maintenance (jivitam) of one Brahmana well versed in the Vedas and archchanavidhi serving the god during the 3 sandhis, by Va.san De[var].  Kadamban of Mananilainallur, a brahmadeya  in Kalakkudi-nadu in Pandiinadu.  The sabha  of Narukadambidu-chchaturvedimangalam a merruni (?) brahmadeya in the same nadu, received the amount and agreed to provide paddy for the purpose, as interest on the amount endowed.

Parantaka I.  year 28 : 934 – 35 A.D.

This inscription is dated in the reign of Madiraikonda Parakesari.

It records the endowment of 90 sheep for a perpetual lamp to god Mahadeva in Tirumaraikkadu, a perundevadana in Umbala-nadu by Marudurudaiyan Arunidi Kaliyan of Marudur in Purangarambai-nadu, an officer under the king.  The measure Tirumaraikkadan is mentioned.

On the third pillar in the mandapa in front of the central shrine in the Vedaranyesvara temple.

Parantaka I.  year [21] : 927 – 28 A. D.

This inscription is dated in the reign of Madiraikonda Parakesari.  The date which is not clear on the impression in the office had been subsequently read in situ.

It records an endowment of 90 sheep for a perpetual lamp for god Alvar in Tirumaraikkadu, a perundevadana in Umbala-nadu, by a native of Arvala-kkurram.  The measure Tirumaraikkadan is mentioned.

On the third pillar in the mandapa in front of the central shrine in the Vedaranyesvara temple.

Parantaka I.  year 24 : 930 – 31 A. D.

This inscription is dated in the reign of Madiraikonda Parakesarivarman.

It records that at the instance of Amudan Kanchan, the administrator of the district (nadu seyinra), arrangement was made for the supply of curd-rice to god Alvar in Tirumaraikkadu for which some fields were endowed by Siyavur Kadanaiyan, [Kana]rrambulavur and Kanchambulavur.

On the third  pillar in the mandapa in front of the central shrine in the Vedaranyesvara temple.

Parantaka I.  year [3]7 : 943-44 A.D.

This inscription is dated in the reign of Madiraikonda Parakesari.

It records the gift of 96 sheep for a perpetual lamp for god Mahadeva in Tirumaraikkadu, a perundevadana in Umbala-nadu, by Irumudisola Anukki[li] Chchaman-achchan I.kanach[cha]n, for the merit of his sister.  The sister’s mother [I}la[tta]nangai is stated to have been a servant in the big palace establishment (periyavelam) at Tanjavur.

Parantaka  I.  Year 20 : 926 – 27 A. D.

This inscription records the gift of 90 sheep by Sulapani Bhattasali, a vaikhanasa for burning a perpetual lamp with one ulakku of ghee in the Vishnu temple situated to the north of the Trumaraikkattu – madevar temple, in Umbala-nadu.

On the fourth pillar of the mandapa  in front of the vedranyesvara temple.

Parantaka I.  Year 1[8] : 925 A. D.

The details of date, viz., Makra, Monday, and Soti and Sankranti are irregular.

This inscription records the gift of 90 sheep, by Maninakka-pirattiyar, wife of Sembiyan Muvendavelar alias Sattan Ulagan of Vandalanjeri in Ninrayur-nadu for burning a perpetual lamp to the deity with one ulakku of ghee by the measure Tirumaraikkadan.

On the fourth pillar of the mandapa  in front of the Vedaranyesvara temple.

Parantaka I.  Year 25 : 931 – 32 A. D.

This damaged inscription records the gift of 90 sheep for burning a perpetual lamp to the deity Tirumaraikkattu-mahadeva, probably by Nakki, a female resident of Nandipuram (?).

On the fourth pillar of the mandapa in front of the central shrine in Vedaranesvara temple.

Parantaka I.  Year 13 : 919 – 20 A. D.

This inscription records an endowment of 25 kalanju of gold on Sankranti day by Koyilanachchipidariyar, wife of Sembiyan Muvendavelar for food offerings to the deity Tirumaraikkattu-madevar from out of the interest accruing from the endowed amount.

On a fourth pillar in the mandapa  in front of the central shrine in the Vedaranyesvara temple.

Parantaka I.  Year 18 : 924 – 25 A. D.

This inscription records the gift of 90 sheep, entrusted to the care of the shepherds of the Tirumaraikkattudevar temple, by the Dandisvarattar for Chandisvarattar of the temple for burning a perpetual lamp to the deity with one ulakku of ghee daily.

This inscription records the gift of 180 sheep by Eluvan Vadukan, for burning two perpetual lamps to the deity Tirumaraikkattu-mahadeva, with one uri of ghee daily by the measure called Tirumaraikkadan.

Parantaka I.  Year 10 : 916 – 17 A.D.

This inscription records the gift of sheep by Nangaiyar-Nakkan Varagu[ni], a queen of Solamanar for a lamp to god Madeva of Tirumaraikkadu.

On the first face of the fourth pillar in the mandapa in front of the Tyagaraja shrine in the Vedaranyesvara temple.  Parantaka I.  Year 17 : 923 – 24 A.D.

This inscription records the gift of 90 sheep for a perpetual lamp to be burnt before the god at Tirumaraikkadu by Soman-ruvedi (dvivedi), a salapattiyan of Vagaikkudi, a brahmadeya in Umbala-nadu.

No. 501.

Vedaranyam, Tirutturaippundi Taluk, Tanjore District.

On the second face of the fourth pillar in the mandapa in front of the Tyagaraja shrine in the Vedaranyesvara temple. Parantaka I.  Year 32 : 938 – 39 A.D.

This inscription with is partly in verse describes the king Parantaka as one who destroyed the fortified (city of) Madurai.  It seems to refer to an encounter between the Chola king and the king of the Singhalas (Singalar-kon).

It records the gift of 90 sheep by Gunavan, an illustrious native of Idaiyur for a perpetual lamp to the god at Tirumaraikkadu on the occasion of his return after defeating the king of the Singalas.

This records the gift of sheep by the Nattar of Umbala-nadu for a perpetual lamp to the god Tirumaraikkadu-udaiyar.

On the sixth face of the fourth pillar in the mandapa in front of the Tyagaraja shrine in the Vedaranyesvara temple. Parantaka I.  Year 30 : 936 – 37 A.D.

This records the gift of 90 sheep for a perpetual lamp to the god Madeva at Tirumaraikkadu by Atti Sadaiyan, the headman of Kiliyur.

This records the gift of 12 sheep for an oil bath for the god Mahadeva at Tirumaraikadu on every Sankranti day, by Korram-Periyan of Kunrur Pusanur.

On the eighth face of the fourth pillar in the mandapa in front of the Tyagaraja shrine in the Vedaranyesvara temple. Parantaka I.  Year 28 : 934 – 35 A.D.

This inscription records the gift of 90 sheep by Sattan Tirumaraikkadan, headman of Palpulam for burning a perpetual lamp to the deity Tirumaraikkattu Alvar, with one ulakku of ghee daily by the measure called Tirumaraikkadan.

On the seventh pillar in the mandapa  in front

of the Tyagaraja shrine in the Vedaranyesvara temple.

Parantaka I.  Year 19 : 925 – 26 A. D.

This inscription records the gift of 10 pon left in the hands of the temple authorities and 90 sheep left under the care of the temple shepherds, by Idaiyan Kilangari, for burning two perpetual lamps to the deity Tirumaraikkattu Alvar.

of the Tyagaraja shrine in the Vedaranyesvara temple.

This records the gift of 90 sheep for a perpetual lamp to the Alvar at Tirumaraikkadu by Baradayan Ulundan Kandan of Kumaramangalam.

This records the gift of a perpetual lamp for the god Mahadeva of Tirumaraikkadu by Manikkachchetti Duggaiyanatti alias  Udaiyama[r*]ttanda-pperaraiyan of Arumbur in Vila-nadu.

This inscription records the gift of a fly-whisk coated with gold and silver, by Muttakilanadigal, the daughter of Kadupattigal.

This inscription records the gift of 90 sheep by Sattan Malli, a vellatti (See No. 528 below) for burning a perpetual lamp for Vishnukkal in the temple at the north (vadakkirrali) in Tirumaraikkadu.

This inscription records the gift of 90 sheep by Kadan Kalitongal, a merchant of Tandiram in Tiruvarur-kkurram for burning a perpetual lamp to the deity with one ulakku of ghee daily by the measure called Tirumaraikkadan.

Ramanathesvara shrine in the Vadaranyesvara temple.

Parantaka I.  year 15, 30th day : 921 A. D.

This inscription records the gift of 180 sheep by Nakkan Tuni of Madanam in the division of Allur-kkulakkil in Pandi-nadu and Kavaiyappi of Allur in Pandinadu for burning two perpetual lamps to the deity Tirumaraikkattu-madevar.

This inscription which is a fuller version of No. 523 above in Tamil records the gift of 90 sheep by Nakkan Kalikesari, son of Sembiyan Karaikkadudaiyan, for burning a perpetual lamp to the deity with one ulakku of ghee daily, by the measure called Tirumaraikkadan.

On the second pillar in the mandapa in front of the

Ramanathesvara shrine in the Vedaranyesvara temple.

Parantaka I.  Year 7 : 913 - 14 A.D.

This inscription records the gift of 180 sheep by Amarakalangadi, a shepherd, for burning two perpetual lamps to the deity with one uri of ghee daily.

Vedaranyam, Tirutturaippundi Taluk, Tanjore District.

On the second pillar in the mandapa in front of the

 Ramanathesvara shrine in the Vedaranyesvara temple.

Parantaka I.  Year 32 : 938 – 39  A.D.

This inscription records the gift of 90 sheep by Sattan Malli, a vellatti living at Kilai of Ala-nadu (See No. 518 above) for burning a perpetual lamp to the deity, with one ulakku of ghee daily by the measure called Tirumaraikkadan.

On the second pillar in the mandapa in front of the

Ramanathesvara shrine in the Vedaranyesvara temple.

Parantaka I.  4 [3] :  949 – 50 A.D.

The date-portion of the record is badly damaged.  The reference to the conquest of Ceylon seems to indicate the year 43.  This records the gift of 90 sheep by the children (makkal) of Kari-Satti, a servant in the palace-establishment of Kilanadigal i.e., the queen, for burning a perpetual lamp to the deity with one ulakku of ghee daily, by the measure called Tirumaraikkadan.

(A. R. No. 573 of 1904).

Tiruvaur, Nagapattinam Taluk, Tanjore District.

On the west wall of the mandapa in front of the Achalesvara

shrine in the south-east corner of the second

prakara in the Tyagarajasvamin temple, right of entrance.

Prantaka I.  Year 32 : 939 A.D.

This record is dated in the 232nd day of the 32nd regnal year of Maduraikonda Parakesarivarman, i.e., Parantaka I.  The inscription appears to be a later copy as the characters are assignable only to the 12th century.

This records an undertaking given by the sabha of Pandanainallur, a brahmadeya in Tiruvarur-kurram to provide oil for a perpetual lamp for god Sri Arur-ttiru-araneri Mahadeva Bhattara[ka*]r out of the interest from 30 kalanju endowed for that purpose by Srikoyil Devanar. . . .

On the south and east walls of the Kuranganatha temple.

Parantaka I.  year 29 : 935 – 36 A.D.

This inscription the sale of land as devadana  made free of the taxes irai and vetti to Sri Kurakkutturai-pperumanadigal by the Mulaparadai of Mahendramangalam, a brahmadeya for 156 ˝  kalanju  received from Tirukkurakkutturai Nambi alias Panachchan Narayanan[chokkan].

The name of the madhyasthan of the paradai is given as Indana Muvanan.

Parantaka I.  year 37 : 944 – 45 A.D.

This inscription is dated in the reign of Madiraikonda Parakesarivarman.

It records a grant of 12 kalanju for a perpetual lamp, on nilaivilakku, a copper pitcher for the occasion of the eclipse and one silver platter for adaikkay-amudu to god Paramesvara of Tirukurakkutturai in Mahendramangalam by Pagan Sarpadevan alias Sembiyan Kila[r]nattukon of Kilinallur in Kila[r*]kurram.

Parantaka I.  Year 30 : 936 – 37 A.D.

This damaged inscription gives only the regnal year 30 of a king whose name is lost.  Palaeography, the mention of Kappiyan Eluvan Gangadharan who figures in another inscription from the same place (S.I.I., Vol. XIII, No. 2)cribbed to the reign of Gandaraditya and the high regnal year point to the identity of the king of the record with Parantaka I.

It seems to record a sale of land made free of taxes, like irai, echchoru, vetti and vedinai to the god for a tiruvilakku by the mulaparidai for the gold received fro the purpose from Kappiyan Eluvan Gangadharan.

On the south wall of the Kuranganatha temple.

Parantaka I.  year 30 : 936 – 37 A.D.

This inscription is dated in the reign of Madiraikonda Paakesarivarman i.e., Parantaka I.

It records a gift of land to Tirukurakkutturai Perumanadigal of Mahendramangalam, a brahmadeya, for a lamp by Kali Nili and brahmani of Panachchan Narayanan Krishanan of that place.  Panchchan Narayanan-Chendan was her guardian.  The land is stated to have been acquired from her husband for her maintenance (soru-kurai).

Parantaka I.  Year [3].

This inscription is dated in the reign of Madiraikonda Parakesarivarman.  The date portion is damaged.  Only 3 is visible.

This records a sale of land to [Tirukkurakkutturai]p-Perumanadigal for 2 kalanju. The portion containing the other details is damaged.  This also records another endowment of 5 kalanju for a day lamp to god Perumanadigal.

On the south wall of the Kuranganatha temple.

Parantaka I.  year 20 : 926 – 27 A.D.

This inscription is dated in the reign of Madiraikonda Parakesarivarman.  A transaction made in the 19th year is also mentioned.

It records a sale of land made free of the taxes, irai, echchoru, vetti vedanai, to Tirukkurakkutturaip-Perumanadiga, by the mulaparadai  of Mahendramangalam, a brahmadeya receiving gold worth 233 kalanju and 5 ˝  ma , this amount being probably the dues on account of the panchavaranellu  to Kurumbiludaiyar and Naranamangala-mudaiyar, by Gangayattu Solakonar.

This fragmentary inscription seems to record a transaction (details lost) made by the mulaparadai.
